The Mountain Valley Treatment Center has been established to provide intensive residential treatment adolescents struggling with severe anxiety and related disorders. Mountain Valley is distinguished by its specialization, its unique setting, and its comprehensive approach to care.
Mountain Valley is one of the only residential treatment centers in the United States that focuses exclusively on the specialized needs of adolescents with anxiety disorders. Most treatment centers treat a broad range of psychological conditions, often using treatment approaches that do not adequately address specific needs. Mountain Valley agrees with research that has found specialized care to be far superior to generalized care, and that individuals struggling with moderate to severe anxiety are best treated when they are around others with similar emotional and behavioral challenges. This treatment specificity allows our staff to provide highly focused education, training, and treatment, and in turn, allows our residents to share common issues and goals.
Mountain Valley provides care in a unique setting that, when compared to alternatives, purposefully seeks to provide care in a less institutional atmosphere. Our primary
residential facility is a restored farmhouse located on the grounds of the Upper Valley Stewardship Center, which encompasses a working farm and award winning wildlife preserve. Bordering the White Mountain National Forest, our beautiful
1800 acre setting offers a range of enjoyable activities and opportunities for experiential learning. Given the nature of adolescents, and their need for inspiration, we believe our campus is a perfect environment to engage often reluctant and fearful residents in a life altering experience. Our rural treatment setting provides a much needed and approachable alternative to the often intimidating and stigmatizing setting of a psychiatric hospital or large residential treatment center.
As a comprehensive treatment program, we have
developed a model of care that emphasizes the whole person, and not
just their clinical needs. Mountain Valley believes that the broader
intellectual, social, physical health, and spiritual needs of our
residents must be addressed, so that our residents can graduate our
treatment program with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and
assertiveness to overcome not only their anxiety but other
challenges in their life.
Whom Does Mountain Valley
Serve?
Anxiety is a normal part of adolescence, and every individual will experience some episodes
of stress, fear, and anxiety. Although a typical phase is usually
temporary and harmless, individuals who suffer from an anxiety
disorder experience a range of disabling emotional, behavioral, and
physical symptoms to such an extent that they start to avoid
everyday places and activities. Mountain Valley helps young
individuals whose symptoms of anxiety are so intense and frequent
that they are forced to live a life of fear, seclusion, and
avoidance.
Specifically, Mountain Valley treats
male and female individuals between the ages of 13 and 20, with
moderate to severe anxiety, as determined by 1) the intensity and
frequency of their emotional and behavioral symptoms, and 2) the
degree to which their academic and social life is impaired or
underdeveloped. Whether residents suffer from new and emerging
symptoms of anxiety, or have ongoing struggles with anxiety,
previous efforts to address the issue in less restrictive and local
treatment settings will generally have failed. In many cases, the
anxiety symptoms will be experienced concurrently with other
emotional or behavioral challenges, including, but not limited to,
depression and substance abuse.
Most individuals served by Mountain
Valley have also struggled to attend school consistently or have
limited engagement in social activities. Often, our residents will
have experienced social ridicule and teasing at school. When
social/school avoidance cannot be addressed through out-patient or
weekly therapy sessions, it is an indicator that more focused
residential treatment is needed.
What kind of Anxiety Does Mountain Valley Treat?
Mountain Valley specializes in the treatment of the following anxiety disorders: Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Social Phobia, Specific Phobias, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). While anxiety disorders are occasionally experienced in isolation, more commonly they are experienced concurrently with one another (e.g., PTSD and Panic Disorder). The three most common anxiety disorders treated in our residential treatment program are: 1) Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), 2) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and 3) Panic Disorder/Agoraphobia. These types of anxiety commonly cause the most impairment in a child’s daily life, and will therefore most commonly warrant intensive residential treatment where the highest level of professional and compassionate care and supervision can be provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
